KARACHI: Unknown gunmen early Monday attacked Nato oil supply tankers in southern Pakistan, wounding three people and destroying 10 vehicles, police said.

The attack took place in the town of Khairpur, some 350 kilometers northeast of the Arabian Sea port city of Karachi from where supplies for Nato forces stationed in Afghanistan are carried by road.

The tankers were attacked when the drivers and crew were having tea at a roadside restaurant.

“Two drivers and a member of the restaurant staff were wounded and 10 Nato oil tankers were burnt when about two dozen armed gunmen opened fire at them,” local police official Mohammad Hashim told AFP.

Hashim said that it was too early to say who could be behind the attack, but Taliban and al Qaeda-linked militants frequently launch such attacks across Pakistan and the lawless tribal belt on the Afghan border.

He said no group had yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Local government and intelligence officials confirmed the attack.
