DADU, Aug 6: A shutter-down strike was observed here on Saturday in the wake of an 'accident' at Moundar Naka in which a youth was killed and his relative suffered injuries when a police mobile van hit their motorcycle.
The relatives of the deceased Mohammad Yasin accused A-Section police of deliberately hitting the motorcycle to harass him and his cousin Abdul Ghaffar who was riding with him.
Yasin died on the spot and Abdul Ghaffar was injured. People pulled out the body from under the wheels of the van and took the injured to Civil Hospital.
The relatives of the deceased and a large number of people carried the body to the SSP Chowk and held a demonstration for seven hours, bringing traffic to a halt from 10pm to 5am.
All shopping centres and markets pulled down shutters in protest as the news of the tragic incident reached them.
Sharif, a cousin of the victims, said that Yasin and Abdul Ghaffar were going to their village, Jan Mohammad Khushik, from Dadu. As they reached Moundar Naka, a mobile van in which ASI Bashir Panhwar, constable Nasrullah and driver Anwar Solangi were riding chased their motorcycle and hit it from behind, he said.
Yasin and Abdul Ghaffar lost balance and the motorcycle came under the wheels of the van, he said. They were crying for help under the wheels but the policemen did not remove the vehicle until Yasin died on the spot while Abdul Ghaffar was rescued by people, he said.
Niaz Ali, another cousin of the victims, termed it a brutal murder of an innocent villager. Both the youths were innocent and had no criminal record, he said.
He demanded that a case of murder should be registered against ASI Bashir Panhwar, constable Nasrullah and driver Anwar Solangi.
SP (headquarter) Fareedah Bano Leghari told Dawn that DSP Razi Khan Almani was directed to talk to protesters and get the road cleared but angry protesters refused to talk.
Later, a team of police officers led by DSP (headquarter) Rakhial Jamali also tried to talk to protesters but they refused to talk to police and demanded immediate arrest of police officials and registration of a case against them.
