Of fruits and men

Published August 11, 2011

A visit to Karachi’s fruit mandi is like stepping into a ‘man’s world’. Look around and as far as the eye can see, there are crates and crates of fruits, mounds and mounds of more fruits and apart from that its just men.

Sorting out fruits, most it from all parts of the country as well as some from Afghanistan and Iran, the labourers once in a while take a breather and let you snap the goods. From dates to melons to guavas and peaches, it’s an interesting mix of tastes and textures on display.

With fasting and feasting being the hallmark of Ramazan, this is the best time of year for the fruit dealers too as the sun kissed produce is no less than gold. As they say, “make hay while the sun shines!” – Photos by Sumera Adil
