LAHORE, Sept 14: The Punjab government on Wednesday transferred Bahawalpur District Police Officer Babar Bakht Qureshi and made him an officer on special duty.

Mr Qureshi, who is currently on ex-Pakistan leave, had earlier requested the government to transfer him reportedly because of ‘excessive’ political interference in district police affairs.

After his transfer, three districts --Bahawalpur, Pakpattan and Narowal -- have become short of police chiefs.

Police sources told Dawn Mr Bakht, who had developed differences with some PML-N legislators, had been transferred on the orders of the chief minister. Bakht was earlier credited with capturing most-wanted militant Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan’s south Punjab head Talha and his four accomplices.

roof collapse: A 70-year-old man was killed and three others, including a seven-year-old girl, were injured in a roof collapse incident in E-Block of Model Town early on Wednesday.

Police said the roof of a quarter caved in leaving four family members under the rubbles. Rescuers and locals pulled out the injured and shifted them to a nearby hospital where Allah Ditta died. Ditta’s son Jehangir, daughter-in-law Gul Naz and granddaughter Mah Noor were among the injured.

murder case:  Harbanspura investigation police on Wednesday traced the blind murder of an elderly woman and arrested a woman.

The police said the suspect confessed to murdering her neighbour, Zahida Parveen, 65, for money. Cantonment SP (Investigation) Amin Bokhari told Dawn the police had launched investigation into the blind murder of Zahida who was found strangled in her house in Mehr Fayyaz Colony on Aug 4.

He said a case had been registered against unidentified person(s) under Section 460 and the investigation began by getting evidence from the spot and tracing a call data of victim’s cell phone which was taken away along with some cash by the suspect.

He said the police arrested Shaheen, wife of Zafar Aslam, with the help of the call record.

The woman told the police she had gone to the house of Zahida and requested her to give Rs5,000 as she had to pay the rent of her house. On her refusal, Shaheen, a mother of seven, overpowered the old woman and strangled her with the wire of a cell phone charger. The police will likely to get the physical remand of the woman on Thursday (today).

Meanwhile, the Ghaziabad investigation police arrested Mushtaq who had burnt to death his niece, Amina, for honour a few weeks ago.
