LAHORE, Sept 26: Labour Party activists held a demonstration on The Mall on Monday to seek release of their colleagues in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The protesters condemned torturing of the arrested people by secret agencies and demanded arrest of police officers who had ordered firing on peaceful demonstrators (of Attabad lake) on the arrival of Chief Minister Mehdi Shah in Aliabad on Aug 11.

The firing had resulted in the killing of two persons, while Baba Jan and many others had been taken into custody.

Led by Labour Party spokesperson Farooq Tariq and National Trade Union Federation Chairman Yousaf Baloch, the protesters raised slogans against the alleged intervention of ISI in politics.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Tariq alleged the police, Rangers and Northern Squad had been raiding houses of political workers for two years on a “false” allegation that they had ransacked the police station and deputy commissioner's offices in Hunza after the killing of two activists.

He demanded that the government pay compensation to all victims of Attabad lake and arrest the policemen responsible for murder of two protestors as well as releasing the arrested citizens.

He threatened to launch a country-wide protest drive if human rights violations were not stopped in Gilgit-Baltistan.
