KARACHI: Federal Minister for Interior, Senator Abdul Rehman Malik, said that throughout the life his goal was the betterment, progress and prosperity of Pakistan.

He was speaking on the occasion of conferment of honorary degree of Doctorate   on him by the University of Karachi on Tuesday at a Special Convocation 2011 held at the Governor House here.

Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Karachi, conferred the degree on Senator Abdul Rehman Malik.

The degree has been awarded by the Syndicate of Karachi University in recognition of his “matchless services to the country in the war on terror and particularly in restoring peace to the citizens of Karachi.”

Rehman Malik expressed his resolve to come up to the expectations of the nation and serve the country in an effective manner.

He told the gathering that included the Vice-Chancellor, Pro- Vice-Chancellors and senior faculty of Karachi University that his father had advised him to always respect the teachers.

“I paid heed towards this advice and throughout my life I remained successful in every sphere,” he remarked.

Rehman Malik who did his Masters in Statistics in 1973 from the University of Karachi, said that at that time they all considered themselves as Pakistanis and that there was no Sindhi, Punjabi, Baloch, Pakhtoon and Mohajir.

He said that there is a need to foster the spirit of 'Pakistaniat' as they all are Pakistanis.

Rehman Malik said that today the honorary degree of Doctorate has been conferred on him in recognition of his services in the war on terror.

Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ebad, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Karachi, said that he was happy that Karachi University is awarding an honorary Doctorate degree to social scholar Senator Rehman Malik.

He said that Rehman Malik's efforts against terrorism and valuable help in maintaining law and order in Karachi are known to everyone.

The governor said that Mr Malik has resolved some of the national issues very amicably.

The Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University, Prof. Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, said that during his student days Rehman Malik was a very active and intelligent student.

He was a student leader and had also participated in extra-curricular activities.

Vice-Chancellor said that Rehman Malik deserved to be conferred the honorary degree of doctorate in recognition of his national services in war against terror.

Those who attended the special convocation also lauded the services of Rehman Malik.
