KOHAT, Nov 6: The commissioner of Kohat division on Sunday directed local administration and law-enforcement agencies to ensure peace in Hangu district and Orakzai agency during Muharram by approaching all stakeholders.

Hangu district and Orakzai agency, where sectarian violence has been seen for many years, have been declared as the most sensitive areas for Muharram. Currently, tension reigns supreme in the two areas.

Of late, local tribes in Hangu district agreed to end hostility and restore peace during a government-sponsored grand jirga.

The army recently completed operation against militants in Lower Orakzai agency, while fighting among tribesmen, security forces and militants in the upper parts of the agency area had been continuing since March 2009.

During the meeting, which commissioner Sahibzada Mohammad Anis chaired here, security arrangements for Muharram in Hangu district and Orakzai agency were reviewed.

The meeting was attended by deputy inspector general of police, Kohat region Masood Afridi, political agent of Orakzai agency Khushal Khan, district officer of Frontier Constabulary Ali Sher Mehsud and district police officers Mubarek Zeb of Kohat and Abdur Rasheed of Hangu.
