LAHORE, Nov 11: City police claimed on Friday to have unearthed another kidney transplant scandal and arrested two people, including a homeopath, for their alleged involvement in the illegal business.

Gulshan-i-Iqbal police conducted raid at a rented house located near Khana Pull in Rawalpindi and seized gadgets like microscope, ultrasound machine and other equipment used in kidney transplants.

The two people arrested by the police were identified as homeopath Muhammad Awais and his agent Javed Masih who was hired to hunt kidney ‘donors’.

The police acted on the complaint of Daryab Husain Shah, a resident of Nishtar Block of Iqbal Town.

Iqbal Town circle DSP Nasir Bajwa told Dawn the illegal kidney transplant centre was being run by senior surgeon Dr Sanaullah of the Lahore General Hospital. He said Dr Sanaullah had been running similar business in the Cantonment area of the provincial capital. North Cantonment police had registered three cases against him and his accomplices some months ago for conducting kidney transplant surgeries at a rented house in Al-Faysal Town, he said.

Two police teams have been formed to arrest Dr Sanaullah, a resident of Model Town.

Bajwa said complainant Shah was facing financial problems for the last several months. In the meantime, Masih offered him Rs110,000 against a kidney. Masih gave him Rs5,000 in advance and promised to give him the remaining amount after operation in Rawalpindi.

The DSP said Shah brought the matter to the knowledge of the police on the advice of his relatives.

During interrogation, the arrested men told police that Dr Sanaullah was leading them and was instrumental in the whole business of illegal organ trade, the DSP said. He said a case had been registered on the complaint of Shah.
