QEA 2011-12

KARACHI: Peshawar’s unbroken sequence of six straight victories in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship Division II came to a halt on Monday as Hyderabad the major part of the fourth and final day to draw their match at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad.

Having resumed at 75-2, the hosts batted through for another 67.5 before being dismissed for 236 in their second innings with Rizwan Ahmed, Ghulam Yasin and Ayaz Jamali all playing invaluable knocks.

Left-arm paceman Waqar Ahmed and slow left-armer Sajjad Ahmed each claimed three wickets.

Peshawar, who were set an improbable target of 225, faced six overs in which they made 26 runs before play was called off.

Peshawar, who had to settle for just three points after taking a 22-run lead on the first innings, now head the Division II standings with 54 points. Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), who defeated Lahore Shalimar by 10 wickets on Sunday, also have 54 points but they are second on the table since Peshawar had beaten them earlier in the competition.

Third-placed Karachi Whites were also denied victory by a defiant century from Lahore Ravi’s Mohammad Saad at the Gaddafi Stadium. Saad struck an unbeaten 101 (195 balls, 11 boundaries) while sharing a match-saving partnership of 153 with skipper Usman Salahuddin (80 off 132 balls, 10 fours) after the Ravians were reeling at 17-3 in the second innings.

In the end the hosts reached 217-4.

Earlier, Karachi Whites unwisely opted to bat on despite holding a fair lead at the start of play. Resuming at 381-9, the visitors added 20 more runs before reaching 401 all out to take a first-innings lead of 121.
