ISLAMABAD, Nov 28: The Abbottabad inquiry commission will try to find if the May 2 US raid that killed Osama bin Laden had any link with the memo affair involving Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's former ambassador in Washington.

The commission has called Mr Haqqani and Khawaja Asif, an opposition leader who has filed petitions before the Supreme Court and the commission against a 'dreadful conspiracy' to demonise the country's armed forces.

“The commission will interview Husain Haqqani, former ambassador of Pakistan to the USA; Khawaja Mohammad Asif, MNA, and president of the National Defence University, Islamabad, on Dec 14,” it was announced.

The meeting of the commission headed by Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal will be attended by its members Abbas Khan, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi and Nadeem Ahmed.

“It is my point of view that the May 2 US operation and memogate have some link with each other and it is the job of the commission to find out whether it is true or false,” Khawaja Asif said.

Talking to this reporter, the PML-N MNA said he had requested the commission to allow him to appear before it so that he could substantiate his submissions.

He said there was no logic behind the setting up of the commission after President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had congratulated the US over the covert raid.

“President Zardari also wrote an article in The Washington Post on May 3 in which the US government was lauded for the operation,” he said.

He said that the alleged memo had been written on May 11 and, therefore, there could be some relevance between the two.
