KARACHI, Dec 3: Two men, including a worker of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, were gunned down in as many localities on Saturday, police said.

They said 35-year-old Muhammad Fayyaz was travelling in a 15-seater van of route K-L and when the van stopped near Dawood Chowrangi two armed motorcyclists came close to the van and opened fire on the victim, who was sitting on a window seat.

The victim sustained multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot.

DSP Nasir Lodhi, the area’s sub-divisional police officer, said that the victim was a resident of Landhi 89.

He said that the police were not aware about the victim’s affiliation with any political or religious party. However, he said, initial investigations suggested that the victim was suspected of having links with some criminals involved in drug trafficking.

However, a spokesman for the ASWJ, believed to be a reincarnation of the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, said that the victim had been associated with the ASWJ’s organisational structure in Landhi for the past many years and was targeted only for his political association.

“It’s unfortunate that terrorists are trying to destroy sectarian harmony in the month of Muharram despite the heavy presence of police,” he added.

In another incident, a volunteer of Police Qaumi Razakar was shot dead in Mehmoodabad on Saturday.

Police said 28-year-old Shahid Raza was sitting at a brick-making facility close to his home near Parsi Gate when two armed men riding a motorcycle emerged there and fired a single shot that pierced his forehead.

Inspector Chaurdary Irshad, the SHO of the Tipu Sultan police station, said that the victim had been serving as a sub-inspector at the Police Qaumi Razakar for the past more than two years.

“He was formerly a member of Sunni Tehrik but we heard that his membership was cancelled and he was no more associated with the party.”

He said the motive behind the killing could be personal reasons, although the family denied any enmity between the victim and any individual or a group.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centrel for medico-legal formalities. An FIR would be registered afterwards, said the area SHO.
