GUJAR KHAN: A multitude of camels from the remotest parts of the country are brought every year to the shrine of Baba Fazal Shah Kaliami in Kaliam Sharif near Gujar Khan on the occasion of his Urs.
Thousands of devotees travel on their camels from as far as Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Kashmir. In reverence to the saint, the villagers vacate their houses to provide free accommodation to the pilgrims.
The wheat fields around the village serve as meadows for their camels. The villagers believe that the ravished crops heal up to yield bumper harvest as a miracle of the saint.
Sale and purchase of camels as well as other paraphernalia of the farmers’ interest is a hallmark of the occasion.
The most remarkable part of the Urs, however, is the Qawwali. The Qawwals from all over the country are lined up for the 10-day festival to perform in front of the shrine.
The prominent Qawwals who had performed at the shrine in Kaliam Sharif include Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Aziz Mian and Ghulam Fareed Sabri.
