PML-N MNA seeks bail

RAWALPINDI, Jan 20: The court of special judge Rawalpindi summoned the doctor of PML-N MNA Anjum Aqeel Khan on Jan 24 as his counsel sought his post-arrest bail on medical grounds in Rs6 billion land scam case.

Special judge central Rawalpindi Mian Khalid Shabbir resumed hearing of National Police Foundation (NPF) land fraud case on Friday. Raja Inam Amin Minhas, Aqeel Khan’s counsel told the court that his client could have died in Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) due to heart problem because the hospital lacked the latest equipments.

MNA Khan suffered from heart disease in 2000 which was mild in nature initially but with the passage of time it became very serious.

Advocate Minhas said, in 2006, Mr Khan went England for medical check-up and he was told by the doctors there that his case was becoming more complicated.  According to the recent reports, his condition was very serious and the doctors recommended his medical treatment abroad, he added.

Mr Minhas produced his client’s medical reports of last ten years and pointed out that the disease was reported much earlier than the case was initiated against him.

Mr Minhas said if the court decided to proceed with the case on merit; it would take comparatively longer time that might be risky for the life of his client.

Babar Saeed Butt, counsel for National Police Foundation (NPF) wanted to argue the case on merit but Mr Khan’s counsel insisted the court on deciding the matter on medical grounds. However, Mr Butt pointed out that the earlier reports of Mr Khan were not such critical.

Mr Butt told the court that the parliamentarian had deposited Rs27 million in the NPF account and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had also seized his 340-kanal land.

It may be pertinent to mention here that after the bail of the three accused of NPF land scam case was rejected by the said court on December 3, 2011, Anjum Aqeel Khan, former managing director NPF Iftikhar Ahmed and former director NPF Abdul Hannan instead of going to Adiala Jail got themselves admitted to the Pims on medical grounds.

The NPF authorities had assigned Anjum Aqeel`s company Land-Linkers to procure land for a housing scheme in Sector E-11.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan took a suo motu notice after the reports of fraud in the purchase of land had surfaced.

The case against Anjum Aqeel Khan and two others was registered when NPF authorities assured the court of taking legal action against them for recovering the embezzled money.
