HARIPUR, Nov 30: All the standing committees of the district council were dissolved on Saturday for reconstitution under the new formula devised by the provincial government.

The convener of the Haripur district council, Riaz Khan Jadoon, announced this while presiding over a session convened on single point agenda.

While informing the district assembly of the provincial government’s decision the speaker informed the members that in order to ensure representation of minorities, women, labours and peasants councillors in all the standing committees, the reconstitution of the committees, under the new pattern, would be carried out in due course of time.

There were over a dozen of house committees in the district assembly, which were constituted and continued functioning as per rules previously in practice.

However, the managers of the hardly one and half year old system, reportedly felt certain flaws in the formation of the committees sans women, labours and peasants counsellors and decided to make the committees fully represented by the members who made it to the house on the reserved seats.

The house witnessed a heated debate when the speaker sought the approval of the members on Rs2.93 million project of new building of Saddar police station, Haripur.

Iqbal Chohan, Nazim of the UC-North, was the first who set the ball rolling.

He raised the objection that since the Saddar police station was meant to deal with the cases of almost rural population, the new building should be constructed somewhere across the river Dor on Chappar Road rather than in the suburban limits.

The members belonging to various rural union councils supported the idea floated by Mr Chohan, however others opposed the suggestion and demanded a change of the site as per their choice.

Aslam Khan Bagra, Salim Khan and Saeed Abbasi also took part in the debate on the issue. The Saddar police station, which was recently relocated in the building of Agriculture Engineering office from the old police checkpost, on Rehana Road was to be shifted in its own new building and the PC-1 of the building had already been approved by the provincial government.

In his concluding speech District Nazim Dr Raja Aamir Zaman suggested that as the district public safety commission had taken shape, the matters pertaining to police department needed to be referred and discussed at the forum.

However, he expressed dissatisfaction over the present strength of the police force, adding that the population of the district had grown manifold, but the size of police force was ironically unchanged causing numerous problems both for the police and public as well.

He demanded the revision of the jurisdiction of all the police stations in the district terming the present limitations as intricate and unmanageable.

The Nazim in his speech felicitated the newly elected NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani.
