MARDAN, March 26: The Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan has taken suo motu notice of the killing of the senior advocate Mohammad Rehman and has summoned the concerned police officials in the case.

It is learnt that the chief justice took notice of the issue after a 17-memebr delegation of lawyers called on him on Monday and apprised him about the incidents of violence against the lawyers during last few days.

The delegation comprising the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advocate General Asadullah Chamkani, secretary general of PHC Bar Association Ameenur Rehman and office-bearers of other bar associations, requested the chief justice to issue directives to the law enforcement agencies to provide protection to the lawyers.

Senior advocate Mohammad Rehman was killed and his son, Raees Khan, received serious injuries when unidentified gunmen ambushed their vehicle here at Tazagram Katlang late on Sunday. The case was registered at the concerned Katlang police station against unidentified attackers.

An official at the police station informed that Mr Rehman, a former vice president of Mardan district bar association, was returning home along with his son when two unidentified attackers riding a motorcycle opened fire at their car.

He said Mr Rehman died on the spot while his son was shifted to hospital in injured condition. He said the deceased had no enmity with anyone and motive behind the murder was yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council announced province wide boycott of courts today (Tuesday) against the killing of Mr Rehman and some other incidents of violence against the lawyers.

The Mardan district bar association also announced three days of mourning. They boycotted the court processing on Monday after holding a protest demonstration against the killing of lawyers, including Mr Rehman and advocates of Malir bar in Karachi.

Led by the association's president Abdul Ahad Khan the lawyers marched from Kachehri to Pakistan Chowk where they held a demonstration against the targeted killings of lawyers.

They demanded of the authorities concerned to take urgent steps for improving the law and order situation in the whole country in general and the Mardan city in particular.
