According to the state’s Home department, an estimated number of 133 women have been arrested for “outraging the modesty of other women”, in Jammu and Kashmir. This statement was issued as a response to a question raised by reporters at JK House on women undergoing trial in the region, according to a news report in Tehelka.com.

In the past two years, approximately 633 and 1,544 women from Kashmir Valley and Jammu have been arrested respectively. The total number of women arrested has now risen to 2,177. The news report states that in the year 2010, 61 women were allegedly charged with the allegation of sexually assaulting other women whereas the number rose to 72 in 2011.

The data collected in the report also showed that other than the aforementioned figures, 15 women were arrested for being an accomplice in crimes such as rape, 15 for public obscenity, 48 for supporting kidnappings, 55 for murder, 62 for cases pertaining to attempted murder and 405 instigating riots.
