KOHAT, April 7: Police arrested four smugglers, including a woman, and recovered arms from their cars on Indus Highway here on Saturday.

Officials said that on a tip-off that weapons would be smuggled from Darra Adamkhel to down country, the police deputed two teams at Kohat tunnel toll plaza and Khawasi Banda to foil the attempt. They said that the police stopped one car (569-Sindh) near the toll plaza and another (6182-Peshawar) at Khawasi Banda and during search found 105 pistols of various bores and 4,300 cartridges.

The four alleged arms smugglers were identified as Ameer Khan and his wife Shaheen Akhtar of Dera Ismail Khan, and Shahzada and Rehan of Darra Adamkhel. They were shifted to Riaz Khan police station for further interrogation. The accused were presented before a magistrate, who sent them to jail.

KOHAT TUNNEL: Federal Minister for Communication Arbab Alamgir has said that the lighting system in Kohat tunnel would be restored within a week.

He was speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony of a guest house in Khushalgarh here on Saturday. The system was destroyed in suicide blasts by militants inside the tunnel three years ago.

The minister laid the foundation of a new rest house, which would be built in the current year at a cost of Rs4.6 million.

On this occasion the minister was also given a briefing by the National Highway Authority, Peshawar, general manager Fazal Nawab on the new bridge being constructed in Khushalgarh.

He said that the 373-metre long and two-lane bridge would be completed ahead of schedule.
