Dam to be completed in Gwadar soon

ISLAMABAD, Dec 9: Multi-purpose Shadi Core dam will be completed by year end at a cost of Rs40 million in district Gwadar of Balochistan.

The Shadi Core dam is situated 40km southwest of the coastal city of Pasni in Gwadar district, PTV reported.

Work on the project was started in November 2000 and according to schedule will be completed by the end of this year.

The dam is 485ft long and 50ft high. The discharge capacity of the dam is 120,000 cusecs, while the spillway is 600ft wide.

The dam has a storage capacity of 48,000 acre feet and the catchment area is 1,100 square miles. About 120,000 cusecs flood water could also be discharged from the dam.

About 190,000 acre feet water will be available for agricultural purposes benefiting 350 families.

The dam will boost agriculture and trade activities in the area, besides creating a large number of job opportunities.

As a result of the construction of Shadi Core dam more than 17,000 acres will be brought under cultivation.

It will also provide drinking water to the 150,000 people of Pasni and suburban villages.—APP
