ISLAMABAD, May 4: Top seed Aqeel Khan added another feather in his cap as he clinched the ninth Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championship at the PTF Complex on Friday.
Aqeel proved to be a superior player against M. Abid of Lahore and defeated him in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).
Aqeel bagged Rs40,000 for his win as well as the trophy. Abid got Rs25,000 as runner-up.
Sara Mansoor clinched the ladies singles title 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2 after a sensational contest against Iman Qureshi.
Sara proved to be the better clay court player though she lost the first set.
Ahmed Babar became boys’ new U-18 champion as he defeated Mudasar Murtaza in the final after an interesting match that lasted for more than three hours.
Mudassar Murtaza won the first set 6-3 but Ahmed came back strongly to win the next two sets 6-2, 7-5.
Ahmed received Rs12,000 in prize money.
Nofil Kaleem won the boys’ U-14 title after beating M. Muzammil 6-2, 6-4.
PTF’s patron Senator Dilawar Abbas, PTF president Kaleem Imam, OPF Boys College principal Brig M. Asif (retd) and OPF Girls College principal Shahina Masood graced the occasion as chief guests.—Agencies
