LAHORE: PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif Monday said Yousuf Raza Gilani, sentenced by Supreme Court in the contempt of court case, had no right to remain prime minister as it will tarnish the image of the country.

"It will be a shame that a convict will be representing Pakistan as its prime minister in Britain," he said in meeting with editors, senior journalists, columnists and anchorpersons.

“In civilized and semi-civilized countries, rulers resign even at allegations against them but Yousuf Raza Gilani despite being convicted by superior judiciary was still clinging to power.”

Nawaz Sharif said President Asif Ali Zardari was "solely responsible for what is happening with Supreme Court and other national institutions.

"Gilani should be loyal to the country, Constitution, law and not to Zardari only. People demand that millions of dollars should be brought back from Swiss banks,” Nawaz Sharif said.

On Gilani's statement that the opposition should bring a no confidence vote against him, Nawaz Sharif said after the sentence by the Supreme Court, Gilani was no longer the premier and there was no need to bring a no confidence move against him.

He said instead of solving problems created by Pervez Musharraf, the PPP government has further aggravated the situation in the last four years and done nothing to be proud of.

"Load-shedding, price hike, corruption, poverty has increased. Not only has democracy been undermined but confidence of the people in democracy has been shattered," he stated.
