GILGIT, May 11: A code of conduct has been devised to regulate the affairs to two main mosques in Gilgit city.

The Masajid boards of the two sealed central mosques of Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat and Imamia Mosque have agreed on a code of conduct for the top khateebs and imams, strictly prohibiting use of the forums for spreading hatred.

The parliamentary committee of the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly had nominated the members for the two Masajid boards to make sure both the mosques were not used for inciting sectarianism.

The boards’ members held several rounds of meetings with the parliamentary committee, after which they reached a consensus over a code of conduct for the top prayer leaders. This code of conduct would be presented in the assembly for approval so it could be given legal cover.

A member of the parliamentary committee said once the code of conduct was approved by the GB assembly it would be implemented in the region.

The member requesting not to be named said the code of conduct had 15 clauses, adding in case of violation of the COC the members of the Masajid boards would be held responsible.

He said the boards would try to bridge gap between communities for the sake of peace. He added that board will ensure that prayer leaders of the mosques didn’t get involved in appointments, postings and promotions of government employees as the two top clerics are highly influential in the power corridors.—Correspondent
