Millions of these South American penguins still live on the coasts of Argentina and Chile, though the species is still under the classification as a "threatened species", mainly due to the risk of large breeding colonies to oil spills, which kill Tens of thousands of them in Argentina. Due to the decline in fish populations, sea lions and giant petrels prey on their chicks. To save these penguins from oil spills, many zoo representatives adopt them and breed them in captivity.
