HYDERABAD, July 9: Professor Amar Sindhu, who is a leading light in the university teachers’ campaign against the Sindh University vice-chancellor, received bullet injuries in an attack on Super Highway near Karachi on Sunday night.

She was travelling in a car along with Dr Arfana Mallah, general secretary of the Sindh University Teachers Association. They had left Karachi for Hyderabad after meeting legislators on issues related to the university.

“We were about to reach Karachi toll plaza when three gunmen fired several shots at our car, which was being driven by Dr Mallah’s brother-in-law. Four bullets penetrated the car, causing injuries on my waist,” said Prof Sindhu, a philosophy teacher at Sindh University.

“We will lodge a case against unidentified persons,” she said, adding that “I am sure it was a premeditated attack”.

“We had taken into confidence legislators belonging to PML-N, PPP and PML-F in meetings at Karachi about threats to our lives since Dr Nazir Mughal took over as vice chancellor,” Amar Sindhu said.

The university administration condemned the attack on Prof Sindhu and Dr Mallah, calling upon the government to ensure arrest of the culprits.
