Security of Nato containers

LANDI KOTAL, Aug 6: The Khyber Agency Khasadar force has contradicted a news item that appeared in Dawn that Frontier Corps had refused to cooperate and assist them in providing security to Nato containers passing through the Khyber Pass.

A statement issued by the office of Jamrud line officer Ajmad Afridi said providing security to vehicles carrying goods and fuel to Nato forces in Afghanistan was the joint responsibility of the Khasadar force and the FC.

"The two law enforcement agencies have cordial relations and have cooperated with each other in curbing militancy, controlling drug trafficking and taking the outlaws to task in Khyber Agency,” the statement added.

“Both the agencies are fully aware and onboard about the security arrangements chalked out for the safe passage of Nato containers through the Khyber Pass,” the statement concluded.—Correspondent

Several outlaws arrested

BUNER, Aug 6: The district police have apprehended 12 proclaimed offenders and 34 suspected elements who entered Buner for carrying out sabotage activities.

Briefing media men at his office in Daggar on Monday, District Police Officer Jehanzeb Khan Bangash claimed some anti-social elements entered the district for carrying out sabotage activities, but police foiled their nefarious designs.

He said that the police acted on a tip-off that some terrorists would enter the district to disturb peace here. He said that the police arrested the suspects and recovered arms, ammunition and narcotics from their possession.—Correspondent

Two killed on road

KARAK, Aug 6: Two persons were killed and six others critically injured in separate road incidents here.

Police said two motorcyclists were hit by a D.I. Khan bound passenger coach near Tabbikhwa Chowk on Indus Highway in the jurisdiction of Karak police station, killing one of the riders, Rizawan of Sabirabad. His friend Sikandar Hayat sustained critical injuries and was taken to DHQ hospital.

In another incident two persons were critically injured after their motorcycle fell into a ravine due to over-speeding in Azarkhel hilly area.

Locals shifted them to health centre in Sabirabad where one of them identified as Sabir Khan of Azarkhel succumbed to injuries.

The other injured identified as Ameer Khan was referred to DHQ hospital in serious condition.

In another incident, four persons were injured when two motorcycles collided head-on near Malok Ghunda on Sabirabad-Palosa Sar road.—Correspondent

Implementing cabinet decisions

PESHAWAR, Aug 6: The home and tribal affairs department has asked the PPO and IGP to furnish implementation reports of the decisions taken recently by the cabinet.

According to a statement issued here on Monday, the police department has also been asked to implement defensive standing operating procedures and provide jammers to patrolling vehicles to improve intelligence collection and patrolling at police station level to preempt sabotage acts.

The department should also make plans for capacity building of investigating officers to improve quality-cum-pace of investigation, crime scene management, use of forensic facilities and effective implementation of anti-terrorism laws. The department is also to provide specialised training to counter guerilla tactics and create a dedicated study and research unit.

The IG prisons is to maintain computerised database with photos of all prisoners and their visitors and to strictly observe jail manual.—Bureau Report

‘Fake’ NGO workers arrested

GHALANAI, Aug 6: The political administration arrested two female and two male workers of a fake NGO in Koz Ghandaow area of Haleemzai here on Monday.

Political naib tehsildar Haleemzai Shamsul Islam told Dawn they had information that some workers of a fake NGO were collecting Rs100 from each tribesman for filling a zakat form for them.

The levies personnel raided the area and arrested two women and two men. The detained men were identified as Naveed Anjum and Sahbir Ahmad, residents of Harichand, Charsadda.  They were shifted to Ghalanai lockup.

The two women were handed over to the Charsadda district police for investigation.—Correspondent

Policeman shot dead

BUNER, Aug 6: Unidentified assailants on Monday shot dead a constable at a bus stop in Khankhelo Gharay village of Buner on Monday.

Officials said head constable Sher Mohammad Khan was waiting at a bus stop to go for duty after a one-day leave when the armed men targeted him. He was in-charge of Bangeray police post of Gulbandai police station.

DPO Jehanzeb Khan Bangash, DSP Sidique Akbar Khan and SHO Khurshed Akbar Khan along with a contingent of police and APCs reached the spot soon after the incident and shifted the body to the tehsil headquarters hospital Nawagai.

The deceased was later laid to rest with official honour at his ancestral graveyard. A large number of officials and locals attended the funeral.—Correspondent

Electricity bills returned unpaid

KOHAT, Aug 6: The power consumers of Ustarzai Bala area on Monday returned the electricity bills to Wapda.

The residents said for the past one decade they had been experiencing problems of low voltage, over-billing and unannounced loadshedding but the Wapda had turned a deaf ear to them.

The bills had been returned to SDO Wapda, Hangu against whom the people had field a case in the civil court against low voltage and other related problems. It is important to note here that the residents of Kohat living near the Hangu border are supplied electricity form Hangu rather than from Kohat.

They said instead of blocking the roads, which had no affect on the Wapda, they had decided not to pay the electricity bills till the removal of their grievances.

“Residents of other villages have also agreed to return the bills next month,” Noor Mohammad Bangash, a local, told Dawn.—Correspondent

Gastro patients hospitalised

SWABI, Aug 6: Over two dozens people were hospitalised after gastroenteritis broke out in Gadoon area of Swabi on Monday.

Locals and hospital sources said 30 patients were brought to district headquarters hospital Swabi and about 20 people were taken to Topi hospital in critical condition. All the patients were suffering from the gastroenteritis and are under treatment at both the hospitals.

According to the residents the disease broke out after the people of Gadoon area consumed water from the nearby spring.

Locals said the rainwater mixed with the spring water which turned hazardous for human consumption.

Dr Gul Mohammad told Dawn a medical team visited Gadoon on Monday and another one will be sent today (Tuesday) to provide necessary treatment to the affected people. He said all out efforts will be made to help the ailing humanity.—Correspondent
