HYDERABAD, Aug 19: Bashir Mirjat, Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), recovered Rs40,000 from conductors of inter-city buses for overcharging passengers on the eve of Eidul Fitr and distributed among the passengers, according to an official handout.

He visited different bus stands and warned transporters against overcharging.

The Deputy Commissioner of Hyderabad Agha Shahnawaz Babar has formed six vigilance teams to pay surprise visits to bus stops in the district and transport routes and take action against those involved in charging more than usual fares ahead of Eid.

Meanwhile, the Additional Deputy Commissioner Aijazul Hassan chaired a meeting of officers of revenue department, police and the District Transport Authority. Representative of transporters attended meeting.

Mr Hassan said two committees headed by concerned Assistant Commissioners had been assigned to work at bus stops in Hyderabad city to ensure that passengers are provided transport at prescribed fare. Transporters, he said, were warned that in case of overcharging, route permits would be cancelled. SHOs of police stations were also directed to ensure that passengers were charged usual fares.

University: The Sindh Chapter of the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) has praised the formation of the Save Sindh University & Education Committee (SSUEC) and expressed solidarity with the Sindh University Teachers Association and the committee.

In a statement, president of the Sindh Chapter of the federation Dr Muhammad Usman Keerio and general secretary Dr Azhar Ali Shah appreciated support of civil society organisations and political parties who supported teachers’ struggle.

They said that the SSUEC would achieve its goal of promoting conducive academic environment at the campus.
