Argentine Cristian Sosa and Uruguayan Maria Noel Sciuto won the stage tango competition Tuesday at the tenth World Tango Championship.
“Our goal is, first and foremost, to work well as a couple,” Sosa said just ahead of the duo's performance before an audience of 8,000 spectators at the Luna Park stadium central Buenos Aires.
After their victory was announced, the pair, both 25, danced to the sound of applause from a visibly moved crowd. Twenty couples competed for the win in the category. The genre is more flashy and acrobatic than traditional ballroom tango.
On Monday, Argentine couple Facundo de la Cruz, 26, and Paola Sanz, 29, beat out 42 international pairs in the traditional ballroom tango competition.
Unesco added Tango to its world heritage list of intangible treasures in 2009, and a half million people, including some 70,000 foreigners, attended this year's competition, according to organizers. The initial field boasted 487 pairs of dancers from 32 countries. — Text by AFP
