KARACHI, Sept 6: A young man died from alleged police torture and his brother was badly wounded in custody at the Hyderi police station on Thursday.

The station house officer of the police station was suspended after the death reports reached police high-ups.

Sources close to the development said two brothers, Tayyab, 18, and Jafar Ali, 20, were picked up by the police in a shanty town near Kausar Niazi Colony on Sept 3.

Police said Taj Mohammad, a tenant, informed his landlord Sikandar, a policeman, that a robbery had taken place in his home. Taj accused the two brothers of their involvement in the robbery.

The policeman informed the Hydri police station about the alleged incident and the two brothers were picked up by the police.

During their detention, the two young men were subjected to severe torture by the police and the younger brother, Tayyab, succumbed to his wounds on Thursday morning.

The elder brother, Jafar, was said to be in a bad condition and till late night he had not been shifted to hospital for treatment, sources in the police said.

The family claimed that when they went to the police station, the staff present there used foul language against them.

After Tayyab’s death, police registered an FIR (380/12) under Section 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the Pakistan Penal Code against the two suspects on a complaint of Taj Mohammad, sources said.

After learning about the incident, the victim’s family in the presence of camerapersons ransacked the police station, smashing its window panes and damaging cars parked on the premises.

Police claimed that the suspect was a drug addict.

The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where a post-mortem examination under the supervision of a magistrate was to be carried out.

The SHO of the Hyderi police station was placed under suspension by the SSP-Central.

The additional IG of Karachi, Iqbal Mehmood, said if the post-mortem report showed that the suspect had been tortured, an FIR against the policemen involved would be registered.

“I have sent the area DSP to the hospital to make sure that no one influences the doctors there,” the AIG said.

“I have also sought a detailed report on the incident from the DIG-West, the SHO has been removed and placed under suspension,” AIG Mehmood said.

“If someone in the police has made a mistake, we will make sure that he pays for it,” the city police chief said.

Three persons were killed in separate incidents in Manghopir and Orangi Town on Thursday night.

Police said a young man, identified as Danish, was shot dead by unknown persons in Sultanabad within the remit of the Manghopir police station.

The suspects riding a motorcycle fled the scene following the incident. The victim was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they were not sure about the motive for the killing.

In another incident, a young man was killed and his associate was wounded when unknown suspects fired at him in Orangi Town on Thursday night.

The police said the incident took place within the remit of the Orangi Town police station, where unknown persons targeted Iqbal Ali and Mohammad Ali.

Police said that Iqbal died on the spot while Mohammad Ali was wounded in the incident. Both the wounded and the dead were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The body of an unidentified man was found behind the Qatar Hospital in Orangi Town on Thursday night, police said.
