KHAIRPUR, Oct 3: The president of the Sindh chapter of PML-N, Syed Ghous Ali Shah, has said the party’s legal advisers are studying the Sindh People’s Local Government Ordinance to see if it can be challenged in the Supreme Court.

Mr Shah said at a press conference at his residence here on Wednesday that the PML-N would abolish the SPLGO when it came to power.

He said that PML-N had been part of anti-SPLGO movement and it would continue to participate in its activities in future. The party’s legal advisers were pouring over the law to find out if it could be challenged in the Supreme Court, he said.

He said that his party supported the demand that there should be a uniform local government system across Sindh from Karachi to Kashmore. The ordinance would be abolished when PML-N came to power, he said.

It was the most serious setback for the PPP government that four of its allies had parted ways with it over the controversial law, which had imposed a dual system in the province, one for rural areas and the other for urban centres, he said.

Mr Shah said that it was incomprehensible what made the PPP government to pass such a controversial ordinance into law despite having majority in the assembly.

He said that a minister of PML-Q tendered resignation because he felt that gross injustice had been done to rural areas under the law.

The dual system had created unrest among people and led to protests and strikes throughout the province, he said.

He criticised reports that Sindhi students were not given admission by educational institutions in Karachi and termed it an injustice. The veteran politician said that PML-N Punjab had donated a huge quantity of relief goods to Sindh’s rain victims.

Marvi Memon had been made chairperson of the Sindh relief committee formed by the party for fair distribution of donated goods, he said.

He said that he and PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif had recently visited rain-affected areas and found to their dismay that the government had not made any preparations to cope with heavy rains.
