KHAIRPUR/BAHAWAL-PUR, Oct 15: Police on Sunday night arrested what they believed to be the prime suspect of the Oct 7 firing incident at a rally organised by the Pakistan People’s Party in Sadoro Janwari village of Khairpur district.

Six people, including a journalist and four PPP workers, were killed and 19 others wounded in the attack on participants in the rally where Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah’s daughter, MNA Nafisa Shah, was also to speak.

The suspect, Azizullah Janwari aka Kaffan, was arrested in a raid on a house in Mailaiwali Gali, Tibba Badar Shah, Bahawalpur.

Khairpur SSP Irfan Baloch told a press conference in his office on Monday that he led the team that conducted raids in Mailaiwali Gali to arrest the culprit with a head money of Rs2.5 million.

A resident of Sadoro Janwari, the suspect had recently moved to Bahawalpur with his family, he added. The suspect had shaved off his face to conceal his identity, the SSP said, adding that he was wanted in several criminal cases. The police official also claimed that a Kalashnikov rifle and bullets were seized from the suspect.

Azizullah Janwari was produced before journalists at the press conference.
