PESHAWAR, Dec 12: The Peshawar High Court on Wednesday directed the relevant federal and provincial government high-ups to formulate fresh modalities for the export of cattle and poultry products within 10 days in such a way that the excessive movement of the said items out of the country could be checked.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan and Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth observed that after the formulation of modalities, the provincial home secretary should issue standard operating procedures to ensure proper export of cattle and poultry products through valid permits and that not a single item is smuggled through unfrequented routes.

It further extended the ban imposed by it on transportation of the cattle and poultry products to Afghanistan until Dec 24, the next date for hearing.

The bench issued the order in the light of a report prepared after several meetings convened by the chief secretary in line with the court’s directives last month.

In the report, the committee headed by the chief secretary suggested that much care and caution shall be observed in export of cattle, poultry products and meat to Afghanistan so that scarcity of same should not be felt nor it should result in hike of prices of these items.

On Nov 20, the court had referred the issue of the excessive export and smuggling of dairy and poultry products and the cattle to Afghanistan to a committee headed by the chief secretary with the direction to give opinion on different questions including the total production of these products and how much of it could be allowed for export. —Bureau Report
