GILGIT, Dec 23: Panic gripped the city when unknown assailants shot dead a man and wounded another in separate incidents here on Friday.

Nayber Hussain, professionally a carpenter, was ambushed by unknown gunmen at Basin Shoti while going to market from his home. An official at the Basin police station told this correspondent Mr Hussain, in his late 20s, died on the spot as he received multiple injuries, adding his body was handed over to relatives after carrying out legal formalities.

In an another incident, some unknown people opened fire on an activist of Tablighee Jamaat near high school Amphary in the jurisdiction of city police station.

An official said the victim was identified as Mir Zaman, who was in his late seventies. He was taken to city hospital where doctors said his condition was out of danger.

Meanwhile, the administration lifted ban on movement of bikes in the city but said ban on pillion riding and imposition of section 144 would stay to maintain law and order. —Correspondent
