Daska a neglected town

Published January 14, 2003

SIALKOT, Jan 13: Daska is one of the few towns in the Punjab which has completed several community welfare projects amounting to millions of rupees on self-help-basis.

The sense of responsibility and generosity of the people have not only fulfilled certain local demands but also provided helping hand to the government.

However, the area is faced with scores of problems which can not be resolved without the help of the government, but the officials seem unmoved despite persistent appeals.

Dirty streets and bazaars can be witnessed everywhere in the Daska town in the teeth of a sufficient sanitary staff of the Tehsil Municipal Administration. Sustained efforts are needed to organize comprehensive cleanliness campaigns regularly.

New residential colonies in Daska and surrounding areas without proper planning are adding to the civic problems. Roads are in a dilapidated condition which need immediate repair. It seems that there is no coordination among the PTCL, Suigas, and Public Health and Engineering Department.

The TMA had launched a two-week anti-encroachment campaign and demolished some illegal structures in Milad Chowk, College Road, Kutchery Road, Sambrial Road. But for some odd reasons, some structures were not demolished properly.

The Milad Chowk has been fully captured by the encroachers. Most parts of the area were occupied by fruit sellers, tongas and rickshaw drivers. Even a pedestrian sometime finds it difficult to make his way easily. Students particularly girls are the worst-sufferers.

As of now, the Tehsil Nazim and his subordinates have done nothing for the uplift of the Daska town.

Traffic problems around the General Bus Stand and Kutchery Road have assumed an alarming proportion, but TMA officials are not taking any remedial measures.
