Spirited reply by Dadu

Published January 16, 2003

KARACHI, Jan 15: Minnows Dadu perhaps enjoyed their best day at first-class level when they prised out the last six Karachi Whites scalps for 70 runs and then scored 151 for four in reply, on the second day of the Quaid Trophy Group-II tie at Quaid-i-Azam Park on Wednesday.

Shahnawaz, who stroked 54 off 98 balls with five boundaries and Rizwan Ahmed, batting on 48, led Dadu’s unexpected spirited response.

Karachi Whites, who are bidding to make the last 16 round, never really threatened to make a huge first innings score once overnight batsman Asim Kamal was out to the second ball of the morning.

Asim failed to add to his tally of 164. Iqbal Shaikh, however, was successful in completing his half century, having resumed at 30. Iqbal’s 54 off 92 deliveries included nine hits to the fence.

Rizwan was Dadu’s most successful bowler by picking up four for 85 with his leg-spinners.

Young opener Usman Tariq scored his second consecutive century in as many matches when he made 104 as Allied Bank hit up 206 for two in reply to Pak PWD’s first innings total of 279 at UBL Sports Complex.

Bilal Asad, the all-rounder, also excelled in the first-wicket partnership of 155 with Usman, who hammered 11 fours in his 165-ball knock. Bilal slammed 10 boundaries in his 96-ball 77 after claiming four for 17 earlier in the day.

Bilal produced a magical spell of three wickets for six runs in 16 balls with his right-arm medium-pacers as PWD added 45 to Tuesday’s 234 for six.

Bahawalpur, meanwhile, all but confirmed their berth in the last 16 after taking the vital first innings lead over Multan.

The visitors went to stumps at 214 for eight after Multan were bowled for 179.
