KARACHI, Feb 26: Eleven people, including two activists belonging to different sectarian groups, were gunned down in separate incidents in the city on Tuesday, police said.

A worker of the Sunni Tehreek was killed in a targeted attack close to Preedy Street where an activist of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat was shot dead earlier in the morning, according to the area police.

An official at the Brigade police station said that ASWJ activist Mohammad Imran, 26, sustained three gunshot wounds in a drive-by shooting at a tyre shop in Lines Area near Preedy Street. He was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he died during treatment, the official added.

A large number of party workers, friends and family of the victim reached the hospital.

As the news of his death spread tension gripped the hospital and Lines Area, where a group of protesters set fire to tyres and blocked traffic on Preedy Street. They staged a sit-in on the road. Later, enraged activists of the group brought the victim’s body to the road along the Karachi registry of the apex court and staged a sit-in against what they described as unabated killing of their workers and supporters. The protesters chanted slogans, demanding that the Supreme Court take notice of the killings of ASWJ workers.

Later, the funeral prayer for the slain worker was offered in front of the Saddar Parking Plaza before his burial at the Dalmia graveyard.

ST activist killed

Within the remit of the Preedy police station, a Sunni Tehreek activist was gunned down on Tuesday night.

The police said that Mohammad Majid, 35, was heading to the Sobhraj hospital to see someone there when he was killed near Urdu Bazaar, said DSP Preedy Zamir Abbasi.

He said the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died during treatment at the Civil Hospital Karachi.

“The victim was head of the Sunni Tehreek Unit 36 of Lyari,” the DSP said.

A Sunni Tehreek spokesman condemned the killing and said that their workers were being targeted in the city in a systematic manner for quite some time.

Three killed in Orangi

Three people were gunned down in two separate acts of violence late Tuesday night in Orangi Town, officials said.

Four men riding two motorcycles arrived at Islamia Colony and shot at Badeen Khan, 30, who was sitting outside his house within the remit of Pirabad police station, said SSP West Asif Ajaz Shaikh.

While the attackers were fleeing, the area people grappled with them, the officer said.

However, the attackers managed to run away leaving the motorcycles behind. “We are checking the particulars of the motorcycles,” the SSP said.

The victim died before he could be taken to hospital, the police said.

Later, two men were killed in Orangi Town’s Wasay Colony within the remit of the Pakistan Bazaar police station, police said. The victims’ identity could not be immediately ascertained, the SSP West said.

“Four spent bullet casings of .30 bore pistol and some live rounds have been found at the crime scene,” he said.

60-year-old man killed

A man was shot dead in Keamari on Tuesday night, police said.

They added that Firdous Hussain, 60, was targeted at Massan Chowk near Masjid Usman Ghani as he stepped out of the mosque after offering prayers.

The victim sustained multiple bullets in the chest and died on the spot, the officials said.

They shifted the body to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities.

The police suspected some personal enmity as a possible motive for the killing.

One killed in attack on eatery

A young man was killed and another wounded in the SITE area, police said.

Armed men riding a motorbike opened fire on an eatery in Pathan Colony Metroville Site, leaving Hussain Khan and Zareen Khan wounded, said an official at the Site-A police station.

The victims were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi where Hussain Khan was pronounced dead, while Zareen Khan was admitted for treatment, the police said.

The police suspected some element of personal enmity as a possible motive for the attack.

Trader killed

A shopkeeper was killed in Surjani Town, police said.

They added Khalid Akram, 30, was shot dead at his hardware shop within the remit of the Surjani town police station.

The police later shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

Woman killed

A young woman was shot dead in Soldier Bazaar, police said.

The police said the incident took place near a private school where Saima, 30, was shot at and wounded. She was rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi where she was pronounced dead on arrival, the officials said. The victim had suffered two bullet wounds, they said.

Man found shot dead

A man was found shot dead in a graveyard in Saeedabad, Baldia Town, Sector No 9, within the remit of the Saeedabad police station.

The body was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi for an autopsy, the officials said.

The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained, he added.

Man killed in  Delhi Colony

A young man was shot dead outside his house in Delhi Colony in the early hours of Tuesday, officials said.

They added that Mansoor Ahmed, 28, was targeted in Street No 15 of Delhi Colony within the remit of the Frere police station.

The victim died on the spot, the police said.

The body was later shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities.

The police have registered an FIR (21/2013) of the murder under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) against unidentified armed men.
