KARACHI, March 12: As many as three policemen were gunned down and their fourth associate was critically wounded in two separate attacks in different parts of the city during a short span of time on Tuesday night.
However, police were not sure if the two attacks were related.
A policeman was shot dead and his associate was critically wounded in what police described as a target attack in Nazimabad.
The incident took place on Tuesday night in front of Anu Bhai Park, the police said.
“The policemen were performing duty at the picket in front of Anu Bhai Park with their mobile parked on the road when suspects said to be riding a motorcycle opened fire on them and fled,” said SSP-Central Amir Farooqui.
A third policeman was also present at the scene, but at a distance, the SSP said.
The wounded were rushed to the nearby Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where ASI Abid Hussain was pronounced dead while police constable Gulzar was admitted for treatment.
Police constable Gulzar was stated to be in a critical condition, SSP Amir Farooqui said.
The two policemen were posted at the Nazimabad police station.
The SSP-Central described the incident as a targeted attack.
A little later, in another incident, two policemen were gunned down near Kalapul on Tuesday night.
SP-Clifton Sarfaraz Nawaz said the two policemen were sitting near their house in Defence Garden Park in plainclothes when unknown suspects targeted them.
Police said three to four suspects riding two motorcycles targeted them and escaped.
“The two policemen had been brought dead to the hospital,” said Dr Seemin Jamali, head of the Accidents and Emergency Department of the JPMC.
They were identified as police constables Imran Mushtaq posted at 15 Madadgar and Javed Shiren Khan posted at the NAB police station, SP Nawaz said.“Initial circumstances suggested that the killing was not a simple targeted killing since the men were not in uniform,” SP Sarfaraz Nawaz observed.
Two bodies found The bodies of two unidentified young men were found in the Malir river on Tuesday.
Police said the bodies were found in the dry riverbed within the remit of the Memon Goth police station. “The bodies were found almost at the junction of the Shah Latif and Memon Goth police stations jurisdictions,” said a duty officer of the Memon Goth police station.
Both men in their early 20s had been shot in the head. They were wearing shalwar kameez and appeared labourers, the duty officer remarked.
It seemed that they had been kidnapped somewhere else and later killed at the scene, the officer said.
Police found nothing on them that could help identify them, the duty officer said.
Police shifted the bodies to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.
Two gunned down Two men, including a cleric, were gunned down in two separate acts of sectarian violence in the city on Tuesday.
An employee of Hamdard Dawakhana was gunned down near his office in Nazimabad.
Police said the incident took place in Nazimabad 3 near Hamdard Dawakhana where unknown suspects riding a motorcycle targeted Syed Aijaz Hussain Jafri, 40, near his office and fled.
SSP-Central Amir Farooqui said the victim was an employee of Hamdard and lived in Gulbahar.
The victim was rushed to the nearby Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police said they suspected that the killing could have a sectarian motive.
A cleric was gunned down by unknown suspects at Rashid Minhas Road on Tuesday evening.
Police said the incident took place near Fazal Flour Mill during the evening rush hours when unknown suspects riding a motorcycle targeted Samiullah, 50, who was driving his car.
However, a police constable posted at a nearby police picket tried to intercept the fleeing suspects and opened fire, killing one of them later identified as Adnan.
The incident caused panic at the busy intersection, forcing people to run for cover during the shooting.
SSP Farooqui said victim Maulana Samiullah was the caretaker of the Jamia Madressah Usmania located in Nusrat Bhutto Colony.
DIG-West Javed Odho said the incident which was earlier taken for a robbery bid seemed to be an act of targeted killing.
He said the police constable who acted promptly would be recommended for promotion.
Body found The body of a young man was found in a Korangi locality on Tuesday.
Police said the body was discovered in a narrow street near Darul Uloom Korangi.
The victim had been shot in the head with a single bullet, the police said.
The police shifted the body to the JPMC, where the victim was identified as Mohammad Akbar, 22. The police said they were not sure about the motive for the killing.
