QUETTA, March 20: Maulana Mohammad Khan Sherani, the provincial president of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), has said that the verdict of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) on the issue of appointing the leader of opposition in the now dissolved provincial assembly will be challenged in the Supreme Court.

Talking to journalists after addressing a meeting of the Balochistan Bar Association on Wednesday, he said it was the constitutional right of the opposition to approach the apex court for justice.

Maulana Sherani said it was the prerogative of the speaker to appoint the leader of opposition in the house, adding Speaker Syed Matiullah Agha was justified in nominating Maulana Abdul Wasey leader of opposition.

On Tuesday, the BHC declared unconstitutional a notification issued by the speaker nominating Maulana Wasey as the leader of opposition in the assembly.

Maulana Sherani said there would be no political or constitutional crisis in the country if institutions performed their duties in accordance with the constitution.

He said his party and other groups wanted an impartial caretaker set-up in the province and for this purpose the opposition had suggested seven names for the interim chief minister.

He identified them as retired Justice Javed Iqbal, retired Justice Abdul Qadeer, Jam Mir Kamal, retired Justice Amanullah Khan Yasinzai, Sardar Inayatullah Zehri, retired Justice Ahmed Khan Lashari and Aurangzeb Kasi, the provincial president of the Awami National Party.
