Good decision by the Supreme Court, provided we see its implementation. This is a picture taken at one of the many "death-wells" or "maut-ka-kuwan" that spring up in local fairs and circuses. Sadly, dancing there is the only source of employment for some of them.

I was born and bread in side the walled city of Lahore there these people were part of the every day life and well integrated into local customs and cultural even some of my friends, I grew up with were transvestites. They used to sing and dance on occasions like baby birth and on weddings once you get to know them they very nice people to deal with they always have funny female names like "CHANDNI" "RIMA" 'SHERMELI", "CHAMKELI" ETC and they always dressed up in a traditional very colorful wedding dresses even in a everyday life and full of heavy make up and they used to walk in a elegant female manner. Some times as a child we used to climb upstairs where they always used to live communally and to find them without all that make up and bright dresses and unshaven was a matter of surprise for us that how comes at night they looked very different form morning. I think SC has made the right decision.

Can we choose our sex before birth, no. It is the destiny on which we have no control. Transsexuals are human being with unfortunate fate, and it is us who make their life sorrowful. We expel them from society and refrain them from educational and economical role needed for their survival and contribution to the society, which result in indulgence into obnoxious activities. In order to make their life and in fact our life better we have to accept them as a third gender, give them support they need to grow and contribute in our society if we want to create tolerant and prosperous society.

I've seen a documentary on local Urdu Channel regarding the same issue and I got to learn that there is a talented and literate people roaming around us from that neglected gender. I am confident that the SC will pass an order soon to give them jobs in government and private sector as well to make them better half of the system and society. Well done SC.

Are we talking transvestite or transsexual there is a distinct difference, the former likes to dress up as woman the latter apparently inflicted with some abnormality at birth. For transsexuals to be given rights seems incredible as even liberal western countries do not bestow such rights on men who just like to dress up as women sounds like a bit of liberal political correctness gone too far.

Good decision of court. Can one of the dozens of ministries or any philanthropic millionaire take the responsibility of training eunuchs as Nurse, hair stylists, chefs, cooks, drivers, decorator etc. If any of these eunuchs dressed like men have par excellent skill to serve as nurse, driver, cook, tailor they could earn lot of money without causing any harm to them or to community.

Yet another feather in cap for highest judiciary. May Allah grant them wisdom and courage to take on such sensitive but extremely issues related to Human Beings. I think its now up to society as how it brings these people in main stream?

So how can Eunuchs have a gender. There is no genetic variation here. You are either a male or female. I guess now a cross dresser will also be a distinct gender. It is human rights and equality that matters here not gender.

I think there is some false information in this small article accompanying the picture. This "third gender" is not called transvestites. Rather their defination is Eunuchs. This is a medical condition. Their gender is not clear at birth. Hence they are castrrated and/or assigned a gender. Its about time they are accepted in the society. However, The transvestites in defination are cross dressers, man wearing womans clothing. This may be accepted in elsewhere but not in Pakistan. Just thought I should inform of the difference between the Eunichs (Hijras)and Transvestites.

We are definitely heading in the right direction. The great sufferings are transforming us from a bigot, intolerant society into a compassionate society. Long Live Pakistan!!!!!

Yes very wise decision taken by supreme court.

The supreme court has done the right thing by giving equal rights to Eunuch. But it is yet to be seen how well these rights and practices are implemented.

This is a moment of great change in the social structure of society. Justice has been done to these poor and down trodden down low people. I hope the law will be implemented in letter and spirit so that relief is provided to these people. I congratulate chief justice and all the judiciary on taking such beg nine decision. May Allah increase your valor

When we are trying to bring some relief to the third gender we must have a deeper look into their lives. I have a very close friend who is actually a male but acts like female. He likes being with for his special needs. But he is not happy with the way things are inside his mind. He wants to change but finds it impossible. I have tried to help him but in the end could not take it and left him to his fate. Although I feel sorry for him but I do not see the point in continuing with him when I simply cannot help him.

It is good in a way. In some cases it is clearly observed that this gender is neglected. Some institutional attitude and behavior can also play some good role.

Of course an enlightened decision! Whatever is beyond the control of a person, should not be held against him, it is that simple. To avoid confusion in the society, if a person is genetically a male, he should work with, and go to school with males, and if she is a female, she should work with, and go to school with females. To address historical discrimination, in the beginning, there should be reserved seats for them in jobs, and schools.

Great move, I am in support of recognizing transgenders as part of our society and giving them all rights that they deserve including respect, right to work, education and fair treatment. They are born like this and its not their fault. Society has to accept them and make them its part like males and females.

This is a step in the positive direction. All Eunuchs should be on government support program that will help them to learn skills to be respectable and contributing members of the society. However, Being a Eunuch is a medical condition; this does not include transvestites or cross dressers. People who have a clear gender but like to dress up like opposite genders. As a Islamic society we should not encourage cross dressing or trying to change your gender. People who like to cross dress should be encouraged to get asylum in a different country. Please, do not get me wrong, Pakistan is for all religions and faiths who want to abide by laws of the country. I do not want cross dressing and transvestites should be tolerated at any level. Eunuchs on the other hand needs to be supported and respected the way Allah SWT made them.
