SUKKUR, Feb 10: The DIG, Sukkur Range, Syed Mushtaq Shah, has suspended the SHO, Abdul Hameed Panwhar, of the C-Section police station on Monday on charges assaulting people.

He ordered a high level inquiry against him.

He directed the inquiry officer that the policemen responsible for assaulting the youths coming to witness the Basant Mela at the Officers Gymkhana on Sunday night should be identified and stringent action be taken against them.

The Basant Mela was organized for three days by a local computer institute, Sistech, for which passes were distributed in the city.

When the people possessing these passes tried to enter the Mela venue, they were not allowed by the police and were beaten up as a result of which many of them were injured.

The people of Sukkur have urged the local administration for instituting proceedings against the institute and as to who asked the police in beating the innocent youths.

Eyewitnesses claimed that even elderly people and women were not spared from being beaten.
