Injured ANP leader dies in Quetta

QUETTA, Nov 13 Sardar Haji Jilani Khan Achakzai, a senior leader of Awami National Party who was injured in an attack in Chaman on Thursday, died in a hospital here on Saturday.

Sardar Jilani was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital in Quetta in critical condition.

As soon as the news of the ANP leader's death spread, protesters took to streets in Quetta and Chaman.

In Chaman, thousands of protesters marched on roads and raised slogans against the government. They blocked several roads, including the national highway, by burning tyres and putting barricades.

Three tankers carrying fuel for Nato forces in Afghanistan were torched by unidentified armed men in the outskirts of Chaman.

Rallies and demonstrations were also held in Quetta.

Traffic between Quetta and Chaman remained suspended for several hours.

The ANP announced a three-day mourning on Sardar Jilani's death.

The body of the late leader was taken to Chaman in a big procession.

According to family sources, Sardar Jilani would be buried in his native town on Sunday morning.
