World Cup cricket: the dress

Published June 4, 2009

THE excitement in the cricketing world is growing as the Tewnty20 World Cup is about to commence. Being a zealot Pakistan cricket fan, I want to share an interesting fact since the introduction of coloured outfits in the game of cricket, whenever in a World Cup, the Pakistan cricket team has worn light green dress, it has done exceedingly well.

Whereas, on the other hand, dark coloured kits have proved to be unfortunate for our team. In the 1996 mega event, we lost to India and failed to qualify for the semi-final. In 2003, we could not even qualify for the quarter finals, and the same was the case in 2007 cricket World Cup when our team, wearing dark green outfit, had to end its World Cup campaign after facing a humiliating defeat at the hands of Ireland.

In 1992, we were in light green and we won the World Cup. In 1999, wearing light green, our team reached the final. And in Twenty20 World Cup in 2007, in light green shirts, our boys went all the way to the final and a situation came when we were on the brink of winning it.

This time in the Twenty20 World Cup 2009, whatever the colour of Pakistan cricket team's dress may be, let us hope and pray for the boys to bring glory to the country.
