Benazir arrives in Nigeria

LAGOS, March 7: Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto arrived in Abuja on Friday as a special guest of honour at a public ceremony in the Nigerian capital, an official said.

Ms Bhutto will be the special guest of honour at the commissioning of the Olusegun Obasanjo Research Library on Saturday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua centre in the Nigerian capital, said the official speaking by telephone from Abuja.

The centre was established in Mr Yar’Adua’s memory.

Mr Yar’Adua, a former deputy of Mr Obasanjo when he was a military head of state, died in prison in 1997 where he was serving his term after he was convicted of involvement in a failed coup plot in 1995. Nigerians widely believe that the plot was designed by the late Gen Sani Abacha to get rid of perceived enemies, including Mr Obasanjo and Mr Yar’Adua.—AFP
