Gwadar port and poor Gwadaris

Published April 13, 2010

GWADAR is a small fishing coastal town, famous for its attractive historical location. A large number of fishermen live here.

The government took interest in the development of Gwadar, and started the Gwadar port project, spending billions of dollars on it.

But the fishermen say the government has destroyed the major site of the natural fishing source by building the port.

They have other problems too. There is a shortage of water. Most people consume contaminated water and, hence, suffer from various diseases.

Lack of a proper sanitary system adds to the problem of people's health.

This situation worsens when people get no proper medical aid in the absence of a standard hospital. Further, there is no provision for standard education.

The economic interests of the fishermen are hurt when trawlers using wire net go fishing illegally .

What is needed is that, along with great development, the poor people of Gwadar district should be provided all opportunities to develop and prosper unhindered.

What importance has any mega project if people living around it have to drag life on?
