ISLAMABAD, March 12: The Kohat Tunnel project is expected to be commissioned by the middle of April for traffic.

The Rs5.13 billion project, a symbol of Pakistan-Japan friendship, would be opened in phases to ensure safe operation of the subway.

In the first phase heavy trucks and trailers would be allowed to pass through the tunnel, while during the second phase it would be opened for all traffic.

The drivers would be instructed to strictly follow traffic rules. The speed through the subway would be between 30 and 40km and overtaking would be prohibited.

Vehicles carrying chemicals, oils and inflammable materials would not be allowed through the tunnel.

A spokesman for the National Highway Authority said the tunnel was being commissioned before schedule, despite the fact that work remained suspended for a long duration.—APP
