SWABI, March 22: The lady councillors should play their due role for the empowerment of women and if they really run a result-oriented campaign for awareness there was no doubt that the women representation would be increased manifold in all departments.

This was stated by the speakers at a meeting jointly arranged by Samaji Behbood Rabita Council (SBRC) and Aurat Foundation (AF) here on Saturday. The meeting was attended by a number of lady councillors.

The Aurat Foundation representative Mr Aftab said that a district research centre project would be established in the district in April. He said his NGO wants to give adequate representation to the women in every sphere of life, create awareness among the women and imparting training to them as to fight for their rights. The Aurat Foundation had already established DRC in D I Khan, Mardan, Swat, Buner, Nowshera and Kohat.

Speaking on the occasion district Nazim Sher Zaman Sher urged the women councillors to take practical steps for the awareness among the women, as only then there was a possibility that the women can achieve their goal.

Tehsil Swabi Nazim Masood Jabar demanded that the women councillors should run a door-to-door campaign for the awareness of the women. With the help of women councillors, he said a dar- ul-aman would be established in the district and for its establishment some meaningful steps had already taken by the government.

Tehsil Municipal Officer (TMO) Mohammad Pervez Khan said that the local bodies system is for the whole community and there was no concept of individuality and if anyone tries to give it such shape it would very harmful for this system.

Social worker and Tehsil councillor Zarnosha demanded that the female councillors should create unity in their ranks and make coordinative efforts for strengthening of their position in the society.

She said that if the present representation of women in the National Assembly, Senate and local government becomes useful then there was a chance that the women representation will increase manifold in future.
