THATTA, March 23: Speakers at “Women’s Conference”, held at the press club here on Sunday, resolved to launch a struggle to bring an end excesses being committed against women.

The conference, jointly organized by the Aurat Foundation and the Citizen Action Committee, was attended by more than 100 women councillors.

The speakers were of the opinion that irrespective of political affiliation, women assembly members should make efforts to protect women who were being victimized on the pretext of Karo-kari and other such customs.

Speaking on the occasion, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s MPA Heer Soho deplored none of the governments had paid any attention to address the problems of women. Women, even in assemblies, had been denied their right to raise voice for their rights, she added.

Commenting on the political scenario of Thatta, the MPA said a single family had been ruling the district for the last couple of years.

She said the time had come to break all these barriers and raise voice for the rights of women.

Noted poet Mariam Majidi said 37,000 women had been elected councillors in the country which she termed a good omen.

She expressed the hope this would bring a change as women could now effectively fight for their rights.
