KHAIRPUR, April 10 Inmates of the Central Jail Khairpur climbed the roof tops of barracks on Friday to protest against the jail administration.

Reports said that when family members of a prisoner, Sikandar Oundhi, had come to meet him, the jail personnel misbehaved with Sikandar and exchanged hot words. Later the jail staff tortured him.

When Sikandar reached his barrack, he narrated the whole episode to other inmates. They staged a sit-in against the jail administration near the Chakkar area of the prison.

Later, when the prisoners climbed the roof tops of the barracks, the jail administration called police for help.

Reports said some prisoners had reached the main gate of the jail and exchanged hot words with the jail personnel.

Protesting prisoners also complained that they were deprived of facilities allowed under jail manual. They said the jail administration wanted to shift some inmates to other jails.

On the request of the jail administration heavy contingents of police led by DSP city and DSP headquarters reached the prison and facilitated talks between the administration and prisoners who ended their protest and came down.

When contacted, Jail Superintendent Nasir Khan said prisoner Sikandar had met his relatives.

But when, according to jail rules, his search was carried out after meeting, Sikandar became emotional and refused to allow his body search.

Mr Khan said the DIG prisons had DIG shifted three prisoners namely Sikandar Oundhi to Shikarpur Jail, Dilshad Jatoi to Sukkur Prison -II and Sabal Jatoi to Jacobabad Central Jail.

He claimed that there had been a peaceful atmosphere in the prison facility. However, some prisoners wanted to create unrest and problems, he added.
