Peace accord inked in Hangu

Published December 27, 2009

KOHAT, Dec 26 The authorities succeeded to broker a peace accord between the Shiite and Sunni communities in Hangu district on Saturday.

The accord, covering longstanding thorny issues including dispute over mourners' route, was termed historical by the authorities. The elders from both sides attended a jirga where issues pertaining to the route of mourners and other matters related to Kohat were discussed threadbare.

The commissioner of Kohat division, Khalid Khan Umerzai, while talking to Dawn by telephone from Hangu said that both the religious sects had agreed on a number of disputed issues after a five-hour marathon meeting. He said that the elders and he would address a press conference in Kohat to inform people about the details of peace agreement on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Kohat region administration has notified that Kohat-Hangu highway would remain closed from 3pm to 6pm for public due to Muharram procession in Sherkot on Sunday.
