KARACHI Pakistan made an encouraging start at the world boxing championships in Milan, Italy, when flyweight Mohammed Waseem moved ahead with a convincing victory over Oraz Avzalshoev of Tajikistan in the first preliminary round on Tuesday.

 

According to information available here, the Pakistani pugilist, who won 13-7 against the Tajik, led from the first bell as he had 4-2 lead in the opening round.
 
Waseem once again emerged a 6-2 winner of the second round before Avzalshoev put up a better show in the final round which ended at a 3-3 deadlock, but it was too late for the Tajik as Waseem carved out easy win.
 
On Friday, the Pakistani meets Aleksander Aleksandrov of Bulgaria who defeated Thomas Essomba 8-6.
 
Another Pakistani, light-welterweight Amir Khan lost to Genebert Basadre of Philippines 5-2.
 
In a low-scoring fight, the Filipino won the first round 2-1. The second round remained pointless, while Basadre mustered three vital points in the final round to walk away with the victory.
 
Pakistans middleweight Nisar Khan battles against Henry Biembe of Congo on Wednesday.
 
Pakistani star featherweight boxer Mehrullah fights German Sandro Schaer on Thursday, while light-flyweight Rashid Fateh, who has got a bye, is expected a tough battle when he faces Daniel Matellon Ramos of Cuba on Sunday.
