GUJAR KHAN, April 2: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has approved the construction of an underpass on dual carriageway in Gujar Khan City.

The NHA had constructed two overhead bridges in the city, but these failed to facilitate the residents, especially patients and elderly people, forcing them to crawl under the grills to cross the road.

This problem was repeatedly projected in national newspapers, while the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) and local MPAs also took the matter up with NHA high-ups.

According to sources in TMA, the NHA chairman recently approved the construction of the underpass on ‘build, operate and transfer (BOT)’ basis.

Meanwhile, a local businessman and his partner would invest in this mega project.

The businessman, while giving details of the project, told this correspondent that escalators would be installed at the underpass, which would also include a shopping centre.

He said as many as 12 public toilets, six for ladies and six for gents, would also be constructed.

The project would be completed at a cost of Rs25.2 million in a period of four months, he added.

The businessman said ground breaking ceremony was likely to be held on April 15.
