KARACHI Pakistan lost their last medal hope when Muhammad Waseem lost to Aleksander Aleksandrov of Bulgaria at the world boxing championships in Milan, Italy on Friday.
In a low-scoring flyweight bout, the Bulgarian defeated Waseem 2-0. It was only in the first round that Aleksandrov scored the two points while the remaining two rounds didnt see any points being scored.
It was a big disappointment for the Pakistan boxing followers who were pinning hopes on Waseem after star featherweight Mehrullah crashed out with an 11-1 defeat against Sandro Schaer of Germany on Thursday.
Pakistan started their campaign promisingly, Waseem, who won the bronze at Kings Cup in Thailand earlier this year, defeating Oraz Avzalshoev of Tajikistan 13-7 in the first preliminary fight. However, the other members failed to register a win.
Light-welterweight Amir Khan lost to Genebert Basadre of Philippines 5-2, while Nisar Khan was defeated by Henry Biembe of Congo 15-13 in their preliminary round bouts.
After the four boxers who have crashed out of the event, Rashid Fateh is the only Pakistani pugilist left in the championships who seems to have little or no chance against Cubas Daniel Matellon Ramos in the light-flyweight bout on Sunday.
